The most important thing that you have to care about while undertaking any DIY plumbing and sewage work are the Local Authority regulations which they actively monitor.

You will have to present detailed plans for the proposed drainage work when you are changing existing sewage system or installing a new drainage system, and also need regular inspections to be undertaken to ensure that the plans are following the local building regulations during progressing each phase of the work. If you are simply replacing damaged sections of the drainage, in most circumstances they do not need to be informed.

Whatever water we see on the surface around your home is usually rain. An earlier method was to directly discharge this surface water into the sewage drains, but modern homes use a surface water sewer or watercourse or soakaway to drain or absorb rainwater. To stop any nasty odours emanating from the drains a combined system will discharge the surface water into the foul water drains by way of the gully traps. However, modern systems are designed to keep the foul water and the surface water apart. It is extremely important to ensure that you do not connect foul water to a surface water drainage system. The Building Control Department is your first point of contact before you start any work if you are not familiar with your home’s drainage system.

Before you begin, you will need to plan the route of the waste pipes. The basic thing which you have to care about is to keep the route as straight and short as you can while designing the route of a waste or soil pipe, this will help to reduce the likelihood of blockages. If the pipe slope is excessive, your joint alignment may fail. Use the surveyor’s site level to calculate the drain fall over the complete system. In the absence of one of these, create a datum point and set levels with a hosepipe filled with water and compute the fall from the datum in this manner.

You need to ascertain that the foundations and structure of the building is safe when digging to install your drain trench. If placing a drain alongside the home, you need to make sure any foundations are not weakened.

The pipes should be laid before too long a ditch is dug as a new trench can be unstable. The pipes should be laid quickly and the ditch back filled after the system has been examined thoroughly and tested as required.

Be wary of the depth and soil conditions and if necessary add extra support to the ditch. Do not take any risks. If you have any worries, you should support to the ditch to reduce any risk of collapsing side walls during the building phase. Keep the ditch as narrow as possible, but allow room to work in the ditch. The base of the ditch should be clean and even and free from protruding stones or bricks etc. If the exiting material is not suitable then you may need to import a suitable material for the base of the ditch.

You should definitely not use hard materials such as bricks to support the pipe in the ditch. This will damage the pipe and must never be used as temporary or permanent support. Consolidate the bottom with a small roller or rammer and provide grooves in the bed to support the joints properly. The support should be smooth and even, from the beginning of the pipe to its end.

Make sure that your plans are made in such a way that drain rods are within reach of every part of the network of pipes. The drains should therefore run straight between two points to ease the passage of the drain rods. Always make sure that rodding access is allowed in an inspection chamber at any point where the direction of the pipework changes.
