Sewage and drains blockage can be exceedingly risky to your health.

A plumber should be called instantly if drainage is backing up into your bath tubs, showers or toilets. Sewage is polluted with bugs therefore it should be removed and the offending piping be fixed without a delay to avoid a double occurence.

As you wait for the plumbers to reach your location, start sanitising the affected area with a mixture of bleaching agent and water with a ratio of one cup to five gallons respectively. Keep children, older relatives, and pets away from the area, and wear long pants, eye wear, gloves and boots. Wash your hands afterwards with antibacterial soap and clean warm water. Now the question is that how can you prevent drainage overflow during the problem? Well you can do so by not allowing too much water to go into the waste pipes.

It may be a blockage between the shower and toilet, or the waste line may be obstructed. Whatever the cause, protecting you and your family from harmful waste needs to be your first concern.

Diarrhea, stomach ache, fever, chills and vomiting are signs of exposure to drainage. Seek medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms.

All objects contaminated by the drainage, including children’s play items, should be disinfected by mixing one cup of odorless household bleach for every five gallons of water. You will have to throw away any items that can’t be cleaned properly such as mattresses and of course any food that may have been contaminated.

If the drainage backup is in the shower area, try using a snake. For the best results you should use a one quarter inch snake that is 8 yards in length. The snake can be maneuvered conveniently down the plumbing pipes. It’s possible that your shower fills up with sewerage without the toilet in the same bathroom being affected. This is because shower drains pipes are typically installed level to the floor, whereas the toilet trap is usually about 5 to 6 inches above.

Always take professional help if you are not able to clean the back flow on your own. Not only would they find exactly where the block is but they would also clean up the leaked sewerage thoroughly for you saving a lot of effort and grief. In fact it is always better to take expert help especially when you don’t know much about plumbing as you could harm your drainpipes if you start poking about inside them with home made tools.
