How to address a sewerage outflow
You might think of phoning your plumber if sewerage is backing into your shower, toilets or bath tub. Decomposing matter in drainage is extremely harmful to health and has to be rapidly sanitised by clearing the blockage and disinfecting the area.
While you are waiting for the plumbers van to arrive, begin to clean up the area yourself with a solution of one cup of bleach to every five Imperial gallons of water. Keep children, older relatives, and pets away from the area, and wear long pants, eye wear, gloves and boots. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with warm water and soap when you have finished the drains pipes clearup. The less water you have going down the drainage the better in terms of preventing more sewage backing up whilst you wait for help.
It may be a clog between the shower and toilet, or the waste line may be choked. However, the most significant thing to think about is saving your family from dangerous waste.
Vomiting, fever, chills, stomach pain, diarrhea are some of the symptoms of exposure to sewage. If any of these symptoms occur to you or your household, particularly the small or aging, seek medical attention without delay.
Use a disinfectant (1 cup bleach in 5 gallons water)to sanitise any toilet items, toys, fixtures or other items that may have been contaminated by the sewerage. Items that cannot be cleansed (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby dolls, and wooden cutting boards) and food that may have been tainted by the sewage should be thrown away.
You can use a plumbers snake if the drainage back up is in shower area. Ideally a 25 feet drainage snake should be used. It can pass through the line with ease to get at a blockage. Sometimes the toilet in a bathroom can be fine but the shower backs up. This happens because the toilet trap is installed about 6 inches above the flooring and the shower drain is installed at the same level as the floor.
The drainage back flow may be too severe for you to tackle, in which case you should immediately ask for professional help. They will clean the sewage completely and also identify the cause of the obstruction, removing it for you and giving you recommendations on how to avoid a similar situation. Be absolutely sure that you know what you are doing when you are attempting to fix your own plumbing, otherwise it’s always best to contact the professionals to do the task.
